I'm glad to report that Mr Longbottom and I were able to get all the fluxweed out early this morning. We harvested a third, and the other two thirds are transplanted.

I passed them through to Smythe and Postlethwaite. Mr Jordan, could you fetch them from there to Moddey Dhoo? They'll keep a day or two if needed, and they're wrapped so they are not obviously forbidden plants at first sight. I trade materials with them regularly, so even if they check the floo logs, there will be nothing out of the ordinary.

I'm going through the greenhouses now, as I can, for anything else that might cause problems, but we have legitimate need for most of it, and formal permission.

Mr Longbottom also asked about the choice of trees for the memorial garden here. For Minerva and Rabastan. I can ask Auri, but I thought perhaps Mr Potter might have some idea of preference, too. It would be easier to present her with two or three to choose from.

Miss Bones, I'd be obliged if you could stay in the sett and keep an ear out for anything that might require my attention. If anyone needs to go to Poppy, see if it can be one of the other Prefects who takes them.

It's my great pleasure to actually get to announce one of these, and for one of my own badgers, too.

Poppy and I had a very pleasant and helpful conversation with Mr Diggory and Albus took his oath a few minutes ago. Mr Diggory - Cedric - I'm sure it'll take you some time to catch up with everything, but do feel free to ask questions. And you'll be able to talk more easily and privately with a number of others now.

Many welcomes, really.
alt_pomona: (friendly)
How are you (and your O.W.L. students) faring this week?

It's quite pleasant, I must admit, to be able to use our little books to chat about ordinary things once again. Though I do feel Minerva's continued absence, and not only because Rolanda and Horace and I have been called upon to take up extra duties.

And it sounds as if you've been plunged from the Umbridgian fires into the much happier (but still wearing) cauldron of wedding preparations--I do hope all continues well in that arena?
alt_pomona: (close up)
Since Remus is not convenient to do this, and I am quite sure Albus won't, bear with me.

Meeting Minutes
Date: April 17, 1996
Location: Antonin Dolohov's rooms.

Parties present: Bathsheba Babbling, Albus (David Brutka), Antonin Dolohov, Mina Grubbly-Plank, Rabastan Lestrange, Irma Pince, Aurora Sinistra, Horace Slughorn, Pomona Sprout, Septima Vector.

Parties absent and much missed: Minerva McGonagall, Poppy Pomfrey

Parties absent and entirely not invited: Dolores Umbridge (there are no words), Gwendolyn Acton (toady)(toady), Cuthbert Binns (ghost, no point), Cordelia Carpenter (toady), Rolanda Hooch (toady), Luxovius Kerr (untrustworthy healer), Carolus Milland (double agent).

Treasurer's report
We don't precisely have a treasury, but it was made clear by parties with substantial vaults that they were glad to throw galleons at whatever was needed. (I must say, that's rather a different view of the world to our usual.)

Review of previous meeting
Since we had several new people present (Albus, Babbling, and Mina) and it seemed useful, we covered some of what we'd talked about a fortnight ago at Horace's home, namely:

- A brief discussion of how Umbridge got power in the first place, and some of where she seems to have allies. (Marston Strangeweale - Death Eater - and Latimer Caldwell, Division Director of Education at the Ministry.)

- The specifics of the accusations against Rabastan (we did not cover this in detail, I filled in Bathsheba and Mina in whispers and notes.)

- That 'Our Lord' (naturally, in that company) has reasons for leaving Dolores where she is right now, but that he would not object if the staff pushed back, and that Antonin did not expect the matter to drag out forever, at any rate. (The blasted man would not elaborate, however.)

- That our general plan was to fix the places we could, connect with those former students and connections we all have, and see what we could do.

Food
After our previous meeting, Poppy and I arranged to order a variety of nutritional supplements and powders that the elves here could add to juice and food for those students who are not getting enough to eat under Umbridge's seating. Poppy just let us know the next shipment arrived so I thanked Antonin for paying for it up front, as it expedited things substantially. (The quantities we need for the school are no small matter.)

Several parties made it clear they were also doing what they could to get more substantial food to at least some students, but obviously that is limited in scope.

Punishments
What brought on the current crisis was that Umbridge has instituted a great many unusually harsh punishments, including those that have disrupted the learning of other students or had a significant impact on exams.

Despite Horace protesting again, Miss Perks is still not allowed to brew potions until after OWLs. (He is, he says, taking every step to allow her to learn all she can, and of course, we're ahead of him there.) She cursed Miss Parkinson to say foul things to Miss Perks (that is over tonight, I understand it). She has cursed one student (Miss Brown) with ugliness, and another (Mr Moon) with being unable to read or write. (He's one of Septima's - a Ravenclaw's Ravenclaw - and she was irate.) We're quite worried about what's next.

We are all determined to do what we can to alleviate the actual punishments as much as we can, and various people are spreading the word to students who can make use of that. Some things we can't undo entirely - the risk is too great, or the magic too unpredictable - but we think we can at least ease it enough in most cases.

Removing Umbridge
Antonin noted that he'd had a firecall from Lucius Malfoy, who was furious. There is some work afoot to call Umbridge to account (he translated after Auri coughed meaningfully, and clarified that that meant calling her into Court and asking Umbridge to explain herself.) However, he didn't think that would be immediate - there's apparently other matters that our local usurper considers more important.

Auri also mentioned that students - starting with Mr Diggory and Mr Moon - were planning to do some work to list and classify punishments given out so far, in hopes that the data might be useful to those who could make a clearer petition of mistreatment and abuse.

We then touched on the accusations against Rabastan, and Antonin said he had plans to talk to Miss Calderwood (with Narcissa Malfoy as chaperone, I gather!) this weekend. A large part of the issue is that Umbridge has been preventing that kind of access.

Septima said that she had been provided with a charm-locked box with what she was told were additional accusations, and that it was to be opened if something happened to Dolores. Septima was sure this was neither the only box nor the only type of failsafe. We mutually decided that forcing it open just yet - before we had the other pieces in place - was too much risk of tipping our hand, but we have it in reserve. Antonin and Rabastan, however, are likely to go examine it further, and see what they can learn. Albus offered as well, and I think Irma had a few ideas.

Removing students
I did ask - very cautiously - about that. I said I'd heard from a few concerned parents wondering if it might not be better to remove students, at least until it's resolved.

There was rather a lot of silence at that, but then Septima picked it up, and talked about the current legal requirements (When - well, I asked why she had it at the tip of her brain, and she admitted to knowing about Thomas Capper earlier this winter and wanting to prevent anything like that again. That was news to at least a few.)

When we finally regrouped, she made it clear that anyone who left might well not be allowed back to take exams, and that it would drastically impact their future chances - well, anywhere. She said that while the current situation was abysmal, she - and we all agreed - was willing to accept a lower standard of exam pass for continuation for the NEWT, if the cause was clearly due to Umbridge meddling. That doesn't make our question any easier, but there you are.

(If you ask me, we ought to ask the Institute whether they want to stay at school and tell them the implications. We clearly have many more resilient and creative students among the student body than I'd realised, hearing various stories.)

Remaining discussion
We then devolved into discussion about managing things ourselves - we all, it turns out, had similar but different approaches to her demands that we detail our time. Horace turned in his gastric diary rather than give her a proper account. Antonin refused to submit anything at all (and told her to apply to his lord and master if she needed details.)

I wrote up a great many plant details, and implied I was off rambling when I was at 12GP. Auri came up with code words (the one I remember is about 'study of inertia and gravitational pull' for having a nap). Mina went into many details about owl breeding. Septima - her sense of humour is clearly returning - apparently did the entire thing in arithmantic calculations and descriptions, and so on.

That's the gist, my dears, but if you have any specific questions I can try to supply more details.
alt_pomona: (Default)
Auri--

You've looked terribly drawn lately, though less so in the last few days. I'd meant to see if you were up for a bit of friendly conversation earlier, but well, we've all been under the wand with all the changes going on...and I've had my own matters keeping me up nights.

So I may be a bit behindhand in asking, but I do truly want to know: are you all right?
alt_pomona: (stiff upper lip)
Auri -

Sit down first. And read this before you teach. I wanted you - hearing this jumbled would be even worse.

This morning, we were at breakfast, and at the tail end, in came Dolores and Auror Crouch, with Sophie Fleet between them, obviously terrified. And four other people, all MLE. Auror Crouch asked her questions. A few she answered quickly, but others, she wouldn’t, and then he used Crucio to make her answer.

And then he announced, clear as day, that he'd been in consultation with MLE. That they'd arrested her mother, that's Maribel Fleet who's on the Board, and that they'd be snapping her wand and Sophie's and sending them to the camps. For subversive conversations.

And then he Cruciated her again, snapped her wand, and two people dragged her off. Still screaming.

I've not the faintest what most of the staff think of it. I was stunned, and then I was lending a hand with students, didn’t get a chance to talk. Poppy only knew that Dolores had come to fetch Auror Crouch last night, from his vigil over Antonin.

The sett, well. It was so sudden, this, and so shocking, and more than a few of them were positively green, or worse. I know you said you've appointments you can't break in New London, but maybe when you get back, you might stop by the sett and check in, or with me. Or both.

Anything would be a help, really.

Oh, my dear ones. If you're not somewhere private, put this away until you can be - you at Laszlo's, especially. I have the most horrible news, and Minerva and Poppy can't be spared to share it yet.

We were at supper, when that bloody awful pink mess barged in, and

Arthur Weasley's dead. Some sort of something at the Ministry holiday party, something collapsing or exploding or - I don't have anything like details. But I ... you all needed to know. Right away. (And that awful woman, she's mentioned other injuries but no details.)

Molly, Bill, Charlie, when you do get a chance to read this, anything I can do, I would be glad to. And I've no plans for the holidays, so if an extra pair of hands would be of any use, you have only to ask.

I am so very sorry.

Look, both Poppy and I just had one of those moments where we realised we'd been entirely uninformative. With good reason, mind.

Briefly: two dozen of our young idiots formed a duelling club to emulate Rabastan and Dolohov's duel demonstration from October. (Despite their very clear instructions to do no such practice unsupervised.)

It only came out because they were attempting to fix their own hexes, and failed utterly in two cases. Poppy's making faces at me - it's more complicated than that, but I'll let her tell that part. And I gather there's another five where there would have been lifelong implications if they hadn't identified it now.

At any rate, Poppy's had her hands entirely full ever since, and I've had my share, as more of the young idiots than I'd like are from my house. (Including one of my Prefects - I am so disappointed in him that I haven't even been able to yell at him properly.)

Our staff meeting on Wednesday was a dozen kinds of chaos, but we've mostly settled on what happens next. Rabastan and Dolohov were - and I gather from Auri, still are - furious and have claimed the right to exert punishment, though they're showing a measure of restraint. The investigation is only going as fast as it is because one of the lot took extensive analytical notes. Everyone involved wants to make sure we get them all the first time, before doling out punishments.

Molly, Arthur, Frank, Alice, Sirius: From everything I know, none of your lot (and I include Harry and Justin in that list) were involved, though it's not clear how many students knew and didn't snitch. I do expect it's going to be deeply uncomfortable for a bit in the dorms, all told.

I do intend to see if I can get Auri to tell me a bit more this weekend, but there's a bit of patience required: she had Dolores observing her classes on Wednesday as well. (That is an entire other issue, mind.)

Just a quick note - sett prefects, I’d like to have a word.

There’s no one time that’s at all good today (goodness, your schedules!), so I’ll stop by just before supper and just after 9 tonight, and catch the couple of you that won’t serve well elsewhere. It should be quick, just if you miss seeing me, do check in with Diggory or one of the others as shortly after that as you can?

Goodness. I just saw the morning's Prophet. Poppy, Sirius, Frank, have you seen it?

For those who haven't, it's a brief little piece saying that the body of Facinorous Stint was found yesterday on Marloes Sands (near Marloes). Nothing like details, mind you.

It seems quite impossible, really. And yet. I assume it's true enough, because why. No, never mind, in this world, there are all sort of reasons for false information.

Do any of you know anything further?

I suddenly feel in need of a very stiff drink. Aurora sent an owl first thing this morning. Her cousin finished the testing she was doing and I'm sorry, I still can't quite believe this.

They did find poison.

Something like arsenic, though apparently not quite. I don't begin to understand the details.

Aurora said she was sending a copy to the relevant MLE folks next. She, her note, sounded quite surprised. She only asked Melantha to test because it would rule things out and ease her worries, I gather, and she's more than a bit startled to be proven right.

Her cousin's promised to assist with advice on treatment, but in the short term, avoiding any further chance of that bloody bastard interfering with our Poppy's food or drink should be sufficient, and we were already doing that.

I was about to leave, already - this delayed us a tad. Frank is going to come back to Hogwarts with me and collect the fluxweed starters (I'm sure he'll make a very fetching Ellie), and we should have him back to you, Alice, early this afternoon. Sirius will be keeping quite a close eye on our Poppy as Padfoot as soon as he can get out of sight.

I hope you do realise, Sirius, that keeping Poppy contained up here - given the music we can hear down there - had better be worth the effort.

I am only somewhat teasing. (Poppy, really, we'll have plenty of chance to listen later this week. And I understand it may be quite something on Thursday or Friday.)

At any rate. What on earth is going on down there, please?

I will never complain about a boring staff meeting again.

I’d hoped we were done, after Alecto’s fit of hexing in the last one, but Septima insisted there was last minute business for the feast tonight and arrangements for tomorrow and Saturday. And apparently, no one had the energy to argue otherwise.

We’d gathered, and Septima was settling us down to business. (Minerva wasn’t there. Rabastan was, though not perhaps at his best.)

And then Alecto stood up, and announced that she’s leaving for good on Monday. (Apparently to Lincoln and her brother, but she was not very coherent.) That no one’s to disturb her before then or they’ll regret it entirely. And then a whole round of ranting and raving I shan’t repeat.

Septima - braver witch than I - inquired about her marking, and got a hex aimed at her for her trouble (went wide, and a good thing, too), before Alecto stumbled out. Apparently, she’s not bothered with marks all term, so on top of everything else, Septima’s got to figure that out.

Apparently took her entirely by surprise. Rolanda asked her after if she’d any idea this was coming. Septima said no, and that Minerva would have told her if she’d known, she was sure.

After that, we at least made short work of the rest of it, and I won’t bother you with the details of students needing remedial work over the summer or House business or the final infirmary reports. Or the final round of discipline for the high spirits of the past few days.

Poppy’s taken Aurora off now for tea and conversation (and, I suspect, to stop her volunteering to help Septima), but she might have more to add later.

House meeting before supper, please. 5:30 in the common room.

Please be prompt and we'll keep it brief.
alt_pomona: (stiff upper lip)
That was a more pleasant and also more challenging hour than I'd anticipated. You might have seen your Neville write earlier. He came to me asking how to best tend the cutting you sent him, Alice, dear.

Hawthorne's a fair bit trickier than some, but he and I had a good chat about it and I showed him a few of the methods to keep it stable until he gets back to Augusta's and can plant it properly, and what to watch for. Naturally, I did not push at his story that it came from "a gardening friend".

There were a few times he quite had to stop talking for a minute or two, as the talk turned Hannah. Thankfully, having one's hands in dirt does give one an excuse or two for that kind of thing. It's clear he cared more than a little for her - he's taking it near as hard as her yearmates.

And so I did something I'd not have done for many. We're having a gathering - just the House - to remember her tomorrow night, and I invited him. Quite startled him, I think, when he realised. I do hope the sett will understand, but I think they will, and turning him away seemed quite the wrong thing indeed.

He offered, then, to come in and spend time tomorrow afternoon helping me finish tidying and clearing some space. So if there's anything you'd like me to have an eye or ear toward, I'll have a bit more time with him then.
alt_pomona: (stiff upper lip)
Auri, dear,

Please enjoy your time outside the castle and don't feel guilty about it in the slightest.

You need it and I'll wager your lad does too.

It will be good to have you back for the ceremony on Sunday, I must admit.

Mina will be there as well, but I'll be grateful for all the support I can muster.

And she wasn't he
alt_pomona: (Default)
How were your hols, Aurora?

Did you get back to the castle at all or was it a non-stop social whirl?

I passed mine rather quietly, myself. Sometimes being at the castle when it's nearly empty is a blessed relief.

Our Headmistress has finally convinced me that it is high time I went and joined the twentieth century, which means that yes, you may find me using this rather silly book from time to time.

You children--and I suppose my colleagues as well--can feel free to contact me here if you need me for anything that can't be done in person.

However, I can't promise that I will always answer right away, especially if I am in Greenhouse Three, as it would be most unwise to give those plants any less than my full attention.

Happy New Year, m'dear.

How have you been finding it so far?

I must confess that I've been attempting to write lesson plans all day and finding myself hopelessly distracted by other matters. I'm about to give it up as a bad job and have tea. Would you care to join me?

I have some quite fine oolong that I traded for in Diagon over the holidays.

And I must admit, I have a professional question for you as well. Aurora has been inquiring about a tisane for her insomnia. I can't see any reason not to offer her one, unless she's taking something I ought to be mindful of?
